This wooden model depicts a rural Indian woman spinning the Charkha. The Charkha is manual thread-making machine. The Charkha is closely related to the Indian milieu, as it is also the symbol of Indian Independence. It symbolizes the Chakra or the blue circle in the Indian flag. The great leader, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, had advocated the use of the Charkha for his "Be Indian, Buy Indian" movement and had always used it himself.
This spinning wheel, as it is called, works with a subsidiary wheel driven by the hand, as the yarn is spun around it. Operating a spinning wheel is a common sight in rural India - this little statue depicts exactly that scene.
