Goddess Kali is an aspect of Durga, wife of Lord Shiva and the embodiment of Shiva's female counterpart, Shakti. The terrible Kali descends herself in order to slay the frightful demon, Raktabhija. Raktabhija receives a boon that a duplicate of himself would be born each time a drop of blood spilled from his body. Kali struggles when she is faced with innumerable such Raktabhijas on the battleground. With her tongue, she siphons out the blood pouring from his body and devours the other duplicates around. Raktabhija is finally annihilated by the terrible Devi, who arrogantly parades around the battlefield. Drunken in her enemy's blood, she does not realize that she steps on her own husband, Shiva, rendering him unconscious. Kali is depicted as adorned by a garland made of human heads, holding aloft a freshly severed head in her left hand. Her menacing persona strikes fear in the minds of evildoers. She is the destroyer of all the evil in the world, while also being the protector of the good and the pious.
