The term, 'Batik' is said to have been derived from the root, 'Ambatik', which means, 'small dots on cloth'. Also famous in many parts of Indonesia, this ancient art developed in India over 2000 years ago! Batik employs the medium of dying fabric using a resist technique. Some areas of the cloth are covered with a dye-resistance substance, so that they will not absorb the dye. Once the fabric is dyed, it creates beautiful patterns on the cloth, different from any other kind of hand painting. Since this art involves painting and not weaving, the artist gets more scope to exhibit his creativity. The batik fabric is very strong and durable as well, so the work of art lasts a long, long time. One can try out many images on batik. Most common patterns in batik art include ornate frames, flowers, images of Gods and so on.
The batik painting featured here is a copy of a painting at the historical Ajanta caves. This famous painting of a woman holding a lotus in her hand is one of the most remembered among the frescos of Ajanta.
