Indian Sculptures » Shola Pith
Shola pith is a milky-white sponge-wood which is carved into delicate and beautiful objects of art of India. Shola is a wild plant found in marshy waterlogged areas of Bengal and Assam. The shola pith is the cortex or core of the plant and is an inch and a half in diameter. The outer harder brown skin is removed by expert hands to reveal the inner soft milky-white and spongy material. Artists from Bengal, Assam, Orissa and Tamilnadu use it for making artefacts used for decoration and ornate head-wears of bridal couples. The finest examples of craftsmanship are however seen on images of gods and goddesses on festivals, especially the massive decorative backdrops made for "Durga- Puja" celebrations.

The Bhagavad Gita, literally translated as the 'Song Of God', is a part of the immense Indian epic, the Mahabharata...enjoys an exalted position in India's culture and philosophical milieu... the Gita completely accepts the philosophy that God is the Universe and everything that we see in it...plus something more that we normally do not perceive... The whole essence of the Bhagavad Gita lies in the various types and theories of Dharma it expounds... Krishna talks of universal harmony and strict, unflinching adherence towards duty... Krishna, in his exposition of the Gita, explains to Arjun the yogic aspects of Bhakti (devotion), Karma (action), Gyana (knowledge) and Dhyana (meditation)... the Bhagavad Gita...purifies the mind, completely destresses the individual and helps him realize the ultimate Godhead...
