Kathakali is a classical mask-dance form from the state of Kerala. Epic dramas from the Ramayana and Mahabharata are typically performed. This mask depicts the face of Surpanakha - sister of the demon king Ravana in the epic Ramayana. Surpanakha was attracted to Lakshmana, younger brother of lord Rama (hero of Ramayana) and wanted to marry him using her demonic powers of illusion. Having failed in her evil designs, she attacked Sita, wife of Lord Rama. Enraged, Lakshmana chopped off Surpanakha's nose. This eventually evoked a desire for vengeance in Ravana and was instrumental in sparking off the great battle between Rama and Ravana.
