Lord Ganesha is a popular Hindu deity. He is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and has the head of an elephant, and is also popularly known as the Hindu elephant god. Legend says, Shiva once severed the head of his son in a fit of anger. The only way Ganesha could be brought back to life was to fit on to the shoulders of his corpse the head of the first animal they would encounter. That animal happened to be an elephant and so Ganesha, the elephant headed God lived again. The elephant headed God is worshipped by the trading community as the bringer of prosperity.
