Face of Buddha

This face of Buddha, made of wood is plain, simple and quiet. This statue of Gautam Buddha the "Enlightened One", is carved from Teakwood. This Buddha statue in an attractive natural wood finish makes the ideal centerpiece to a devotional area, or a serene and beautiful addition to any room.

The Buddhism philosophy originated from the teachings of Gautam Buddha. Buddha is seen as a guide to one's path to Enlightenment. Hindu philosophy sees Lord Buddha as the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu - possibly to try and portray Buddhism as a sub-religion of Hinduism.

Gautam Buddha was originally the prince Siddhartha, son of Queen Mayadevi and King Suddhodana of Lumbini (located near the border between Nepal and India). As a prince he exceled in all fields of learning, skill and sport and had mastered all worldly arts. He married Yasodhara and thereafter practiced a life of pleasure in the palace amongst the women of the court. One day when riding in his chariot he came upon three different sights of suffering men - one, feeble with age, another, struck down with sickness, and finally, a corpse. He immediately realized the suffering in man's life and the inevitability of death. He then chanced upon a monk of holy countenance, and recognized the path meant for him. He abdicated his right to the throne, forsook his life of pleasure and set out to seek the eternal Truth. He became an ascetic and started practicing severe austerities in the hope that complete renunciation of the world and all its trappings was the only way to enlightenment. However this path only took him near to death without providing him with a path to enlightenment. He then abandoned took to studying his own self, his heart and mind. Sitting under a fig tree (or pipal tree, as is known in India), he meditated with the sole aim of attaining eternal knowledge. After forty days the Buddha was bestowed with enlightenment. Gautam Buddha spent the rest of the 45 years of his life spreading the knowledge he had gained amongst the common folk to help them achieve peace and eventually Enlightenment.
