Recreated Barbie depicting Chandramukhi - a courtesan dancer from the Indian tragedy novel, Devdas, written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. Devdas was the son of a rich landlord in the early days of 20th century Bengal. His love for his childhood companion, Parvati (Paro), blossoms when he comes back after his education from Calcutta. However, forced by family pressures against an inter-caste and inter-class marriage, he decides to leave his village, and Paro, for Calcutta, where he writes to her about his inability to marry her. However, when he realizes the injustice that he had inadvertently meted out to Paro, he returns to his village to convince Paro to take him back into her life. However, her wedding already having being fixed to another rich landlord, she refuses Devdas. The rejection leads Devdas on to a path of alcoholism and eventually to a courtesan in Calcutta, by the name of Chandramukhi.
Chandramukhi was popular amongst the rich landlords of Calcutta. However Chandramukhi falls in love with Devdas but her love remains largely unreciprocated. She takes care of Devdas through his illness and his depressive state of mind but without any expectation from Devdas of reciprocation of her love. She dedicates her life to this man who only knows of one woman in his life - Paro. Alcohol eventually leads Devdas to fall terminally ill, after which he realizes the worth of Chandramukhi's love for him. He tells her so and in a way she finds solace in this final acceptance of her love for him.
To keep his word given to Paro, Devdas makes a final journey to Paro's home, who of course is now married. He had promised Paro an opportunity to serve him once in his lifetime. However, Devdas reaches Paro's doorstep on the verge of death and dies before he can get a final glimpse of Paro.
