Laila Majnu is a very beautiful Middle-Eastern love story, which is actually based on the real story of a man named Qays ibnal-Mullawah, hailing from the northern part of the Arabian Peninsula. This story took place sometime during the 7th Century. The young man saw Laila and fell deeply in love with her. Qays would write several poems on her and gave all his heart to her.
However, when his father came to know of his love for the beautiful, young and lissome lass, he prevented his son from marrying her. This affected Majnu deeply, making him a madman. That was the reason he was called Majnu Laila, which means, ‘mad after Laila’. Laila married another man but died after a few years. Majnu turned a vagabond and left for the desert, to be found again only in death.
The story of Laila and Majnu is one of those timeless classics and has been the favorite subject of poetry, books and films.
