The majestic Indian peacock, the king of birds and India’s National Bird, is truly a visual delight! An effervescent green-blue in color, he has an impressive plumage filled with colorful feathers. Peacocks are most known for this long tail, which they display while trying to court the peahen, their female counterpart. Peacocks also spread out their plumage during the spring and in the rainy season, when they dance in sheer abandon. Their graceful movements, along with the plume in full display, make them a sight fit for the Gods! Though peacocks can fly a short distance, they mostly walk on the ground and cannot fly to any substantial height. Featured here is a wonderful painting showing a peacock perching on a low branch of a tree. His brilliant ‘train’ extends behind him and his whole stance suggests royalty and majesty! The gathering dusk in the picture adds even more beauty to the entire portrait, accentuating the various shades of the peacock’s skin. |
