King Ugrasen’s evil son, Kansa, is infuriated when a celestial voice warns him that his sister, Devaki’s, eighth son would be responsible for his downfall and ultimate death. Fearing the impending danger, he puts his sister Devaki and her husband, Vasudev, in prison. Each time Devaki gives birth to a child, Kansa comes personally to the cell and kills it. Just before the birth of the eighth child, Devaki and Vasudev are very anxious and in constant prayer. The child is born during midnight and at that very moment, Lord Vishnu manifests in front of them in the form of a brilliant light. A divine voice asks Vasudev to cross the Yamuna and leave the child at Yashoda’s palace, taking her newborn back with him to the prison. The female child that Vasudev brings back is actually Maya, the Mother of Illusion. When Kansa hears of the birth, he immediately proceeds to hit the baby against the prison wall to kill it. To his dismay, though, the child flies away from his arms and warns him that his nemesis, Krishna, is already born and will kill him very soon. Devaki and Vasudev bow down in front of the image of the all- powerful Mother Shakti in the background, while Kansa looks on with a mixture of amazement and fear.
