Blacksmiths work to create objects from raw iron and steel, by using their various tools to bend, shape and cut the metal in its non-liquid form. Blacksmiths are very industrious, creating various utility items such as gates, grills, pieces of furniture, sculpture, tools, utensils, horseshoes, weapons and so on. The term ‘blacksmith’ could come from the fact that they hit (smite) black metal, such as iron. Shown here is a scene of a rural Indian blacksmith from Rajasthan, busy at his job. He comfortably settles himself in the great outdoors and places his various tools, including forge, tongs, anvil and hammers, around him. He is helped by his partner, who stokes the fire for him and readies his little furnace, so that his work is lightened to that extent. His assistant too helps him load his wares onto their bullock cart. The blacksmith works away diligently, making various pieces of utility and interest, trying to make the most of the time available to him.
