Authentic gemstone paintings are some of the most desired souvenirs of Indian art, originating in Jaipur. Gemstone paintings, as the name suggests, are made with semi-precious gemstones. This is one of the finest and most complicated of all arts. The gemstones are first crushed and powdered and are then pasted to the back of a glass sheet. The main painting is done on the frontal side of the sheet of glass and the gemstones are stuck on the rear side of the glass. The semi-precious stones let out a brilliant shine against the light, which gives rise to the emergence of different shades in the painting, when viewed from different angles. The stunning painting featured here is a gemstone painting of a ragini or a ‘female’ melody from Indian music. Each melody or raga is assigned a particular personality in Indian music. These melodies are further classified into ragas and raginis and described in detail in the Ragamala paintings. This beautiful gemstone painting depicts a raagini sitting under the shade of a tree, playing with some deers.
