Featured here is a powerful portrait of the all-pervading Maha Kali, an aspect of Goddess Shakti. Legend has it that, while at battle against evil, the ten-headed, ten-armed Devi, accidentally stepped on her own husband, Lord Shiva, rendering him unconscious. She is mortified when she realizes her mistake - scriptures cite this as the reason why Maha Kali is seen with her tongue sticking out!
Wearing a garland of human heads; holding the head of a corpse in one hand and the Trisula or the Trident in the other; long, flowing hair let loose, snakes coiling around her ankles and wrists, she strikes terror in the minds of evildoers.
Her whole body language radiating raudra (anger), she fights and destroys all evil forces. She is the savior of the Sadhus (the pure-hearted ones) and showers motherly love and grace on them, bestowing them with innumerable boons and blessings for health, wealth and happiness.
