The wick lamp is an integral part of any Hindu household. Hindus light the lamp two times a day, in the mornings and evenings, before they sit to offer their prayers to God. Lighting the oil lamp has a great significance in the Hindu tradition. Knowledge is light and ignorance, darkness The lamp or the diya symbolizes knowledge, the lighting of which dispels the mind’s agnyaana (ignorance).

The wick symbolizes the negative traits in all of us or the ‘vaasanas’. Lighting the wick signifies the burning of the negative energies within us, thereby releasing the body of its limitations and trying to reach the Ultimate Being.

The wick lamp featured here is made of brass and has a covering of the same material, which is topped with the figure of the ‘Om’. ‘Om’ is the most sacred Hindu mantra, the chanting of which is believed to immediately transport an aspirant to higher planes of spirituality.
