Goddess Lakshmi, consort of Lord Vishnu, is one of the three most powerful Goddesses in Hindu mythology, namely, Lakshmi, Saraswati and Parvati. Lakshmi is the Goddess of Wealth. She is depicted sitting on a lotus, also holding lotuses in two of Her four hands. Some works of art also show her flanked by an elephant on either side, showering Her with flowers.
From Her right hand, there is a steady flow of gold coins, which is actually shown to depict Her as a symbol of prosperity.
This statuette of Lakshmi that you see here is made of Plaster of Paris, a material that is very commonly used for etching stone sculptures. Plaster of Paris is a light material and is easily manageable too. It is used for a variety of purposes, even as building material. But it is also fragile and prone to damage, hence has to be carefully maintained.
