| This antiquated Dhokra (lost wax casting) item depicts two tribal women at work, grinding spices for use in the kitchen. Even today, not only in the tribal villages, but also in rural India, large number of people do not use machine ground spices. They use manual means of grinding spices with the help of iron bar and iron bowls. It is but natural that the full flavour of spices is retained. This antiquated item is made of cast metal using the lost-wax (or cire perdue) process called Dhokra. Dhokra is an alloy of Brass, Copper and Zinc and is used by tribals to make different kind of decoration items. These artifacts are made with great skill and meticulousness by the lost wax process, which gives them a fascinating antique look. Tribal families produce indigenous designs with typical mesh like features giving each and every article a distinctive beauty suitable for interior decoration. This item is a wonderful imagination of a tribal artist from Madhya Pradesh, India. |
