Workmanship on wood has flourished in India over the centuries. Dolls made from wood are very popular. Traditional designs are carved on wood and then sometims painted over giving the whole object a rich effect. Dolls made from walnut wood come from three parts of the tree - the branches, the trunk and the root. The branches have the palest colour of wood and the trunk the darkest. Branches have no veins, trunks have the strongest marked veins. As walnut is a soft wood, it takes carving very well. Dolls and other items made of sandalwood, rosewood, walnutwood and ivory are of artistic excellence. Our growing collection of wooden statues has Hindu Gods, Goddesses, statues of Gautam Buddha, bowls and flower vases with intricate Indian carvings, amongst other things. We also have wood craft from the interior tribal areas of India. Tribal wood scultpture, though seldom provide intricate woodwork which sometimes is visible on conventionally available Indian wood art items, it is true that they reflect the colorful nature and the simplicity of the Indian folk culture all at the same time.
