Siddhartha Gautama, who later on went to become the Buddha, is one of the greatest saint philosophers, who also founded Buddhism. The Buddha, or the 'Enlightened One', is regarded as the Supreme God by Buddhists all over the world. Buddhism, as a religion, teaches peace, love and non-violence. Having tired of mundane life, Siddhartha Gautama, who came from a royal family, left all worldly luxuries and proceeded in search of true enlightenment. Gautama, also called the 'Sakyamuni', is known for the many spiritual discourses he often gave to his followers. These and the monastic rules laid down by him had been recorded by his sangha and are passed down the generations of Buddhists monks in the oral tradition. Though the Buddha was born in Lumbini in modern-day Nepal, the religion spread widely and gained acceptance all around Asia. The Orient, especially, has special affinity for Buddhism. One gets to see many Buddha temples all around Thailand and Indonesia, showing Buddha in various forms. The statue of the Reclining Buddha in Bangkok is the biggest and most famous in the world. The statue featured here is a clever recreation of the same.
