Indian classical music is special in that it regards all its melodies as embodiments of the divine. Each raga or melody is given a proper shape, appearance and even physical attributes. Why, many such ragas even have their respective families, spouses and children! Depicted here is the Ragini Vasanta. A Ragini, meaning a female raga, is shown with typical feminine attributes. The raga Vasanta in Hindustani (North Indian classical) music is vibrant and captures the essence of spring (Basant), when everything around is in full bloom and pulsates with life. The Ragini is shown as a female in her first flush of youth. She glows with joy and verve and dances away, celebrating the beauty of the season and reveling in the promise of spring.
