In Buddhism, the Buddha, also known as the Gautama Buddha, is the one who attained a state of complete enlightenment, ‘Nirvaana’. Known by the names Sakyamuni and Siddhaartha Gautama, the Buddha was a highly evolved spiritual master and also the founder of Buddhism. Gautama Buddha is the central figure of Buddhism and is even revered by some as one of the avatars (incarnations) of Mahavishnu.

He created the sangha sect of Buddhism, which recorded the Buddha’s discourses, the rules he stipulated regarding the Buddhist religious rites and rituals after His samaadhi. These were put into written words about 4 centuries later.
