Paatachitra, the art of painting on Tassar silk fabric, originates from Orissa. These paintings usually deal with mythological figures and Gods and Goddesses. This painting depicts three forms of Devi Kali. Goddess Kali is an aspect of Durga, who was summoned to kill the terrible Raktabhija. Devi Kali is feared as being dark and violent, but among Tantrics, She is regarded as the beacon light, showing the way towards the true Brahman. Kali has many forms, but most important among them are the Dakshina Kalika, the female aspect of divinity, that is worshipped by Bengalis. Her forms include the Bhadra Kali (or the auspicious One), the Smashaana Kali (worshipped by Tantrics in crematoriums) and the Guhya (mysterious) Kali. These three attributes are given to the Devi Kali by Tantra Shastra, which extols the Goddess as the Ultimate Cosmic Power that gave birth to the whole world, the Shakti. |
