In Hindu mythology, Devi Durga is the Consort of Lord Shiva, one of the Divine Trinity. She is the most powerful Goddess, also hailed as Shakti, Parvati, Meenakshi and so on.
Legend has it that Goddess Parvati incarnated as Durga in order to kill the fearsome Mahishasura, the buffalo-headed demon. The Gods summoned the Durga aspect and bestowed Her with their weapons to fight and vanquish Mahisha.
Devi Durga has ten arms, a resplendent face, slender body and long, flowing hair. She waged a war against Mahisha and on the tenth day, defeated and annihilated him.
This lovely terracotta sculpture of the Devi brings out Her beauty, spiritual strength and serenity. Bengalis believe that installing this wall hanging brings peace and prosperity to their home, while preventing evil forces from getting in.
The crown and other ornaments are painstakingly crafted with jute, framing the face in such a way so as to bring out its beauty.
